Psoriasis affects more than 3% of the US adult population. That is more than 7.5 million US adults
“Psoriasis is an immune-mediated disease (a disease with an unclear cause that is characterized by inflammation caused by dysfunction of the immune system) that causes inflammation in the body. [1] There may be visible signs of inflammation such as raised plaques (plaques may look different for different skin types) and scales on the skin.
“This occurs because the overactive immune system speeds up skin cell growth. Normal skin cells completely grow and shed (fall off) in a month. With psoriasis, skin cells do this in only three or four days. Instead of shedding, the skin cells pile up on the surface of the skin. Some people report that psoriasis plaques itch, burn, and sting. Plaques and scales may appear on any part of the body, although they are commonly found on the elbows, knees, and scalp. Read more about psoriasis on psoriasis.org
Meet Sara
She is truly a gorgeous person inside and out, yet she hides away from the world.
I had the honor to photograph Sara and give her an amazing psoriasis boudoir photoshoot experience. She is the sunshine in your life, she is the best friend you’ll ever have, she will support you and be there for you. She is hilariously funny. She is truly a gorgeous person inside and out, yet she hides away from the world. She feels insecure at times, and it erodes her self-confidence. If only she knew how the rest of the world sees her.
Psoriasis is a skin disorder that causes skin cells to multiply up to 10 times faster than normal. This makes the skin build up into bumpy red patches covering potentially all of the body. It gets worse with stress. It hurts. It sucks. But, that’s not a reason to stop living. She HAS Psoriasis but she IS NOT Psoriasis.
It took a bit of time, but I am honored that Sarah trusted me to photograph her and capture incredible portraits of her. She cried. Several times. She shed tears during the photoshoot and again afterward when she saw the images we captured together of her. Happy tears, she said. In her own words, she also wrote: “Allie is one of the most professional photogs I’ve met in my life. She makes you feel so confident and her work speaks for itself!”She never realized how a photoshoot could change her own perception of herself.
This is how the rest of the world sees you, Sarah. You are beautiful. You are stunning. And this goes to all of you who feel different: Just because you look different, or your skin may have imperfections, you have different hair, vitiligo, …, none of it has anything to do with being beautiful. Beauty comes from within. And you are, beautiful. You deserve to live your life without judgment. You deserve to be happy and confident. Feel it. Know it. And let this knowledge carry you far.
